In the race for renewable energy we see many solar panels being installed around Gibraltar. This is fantastic, and should be encouraged.
The question is, why should they be cleaned regularly?
Solar panels are amazing, but to achieve maximum output, and maximum efficiency they must be kept clean. Gibraltar is a place with lots of traffic and lots of dust, so the efficiency levels of the panels will begin to decline as time passes. Add to this the lime scale that builds up and the birds making a mess on them, and you have a rather inefficient investment.
That's fine and all but wont the rain wash it?
In a word, no. Firstly, we do not get enough frequency of heavy rains to wash the dirt that accumulates on them. Secondly, rain water carries dirt it picks up from our polluted atmosphere, meaning that when the rain water evaporates all this is left on the panels.
So, how can we clean it?
By means of our Pure water system we can reach awkward places and wash the panels. We use a brush with the softest of bristles so they don’t damage or scratch the cells. Pure water is applied throughout to rinse the dirt that the brush had softened. The result is a spot free finish.
